  • Uncontrolled diabetes. Diabetes contributes to the development of gum disease by making those affected more susceptible to infection. And, gum disease can make it more difficult to control diabetes.
  • Genetics. Certain genes and inherited immune-response conditions have been linked to a predisposition for gum disease. It is thought that about 30 percent of people suffer from gum disease due to genetics.
