Dentures – Why They Are Needed and What to Expect

dca-blog_dentures-splash-in-glass

A large percentage of the population relies on affordable quality dentures to restore missing teeth. When teeth are lost, it dramatically affects appearance, but aesthetic problems are just the beginning. Normal chewing and speaking also require intact teeth. Today’s dentistry offers advanced dentures that look, fit. and feel better than the false teeth of the past. Various forms of dentures are available to meet each individual’s needs. Partial dentures replace one or more teeth when there are still healthy teeth intact. Complete dentures replace all teeth.

The Process of Getting Dentures

The process of getting dentures typically takes several weeks to complete. First, the dentist performs an evaluation and chooses the best dentures for the patient. Next, the teeth, gums, and jaw are accurately measured with impressions or molds so that the completed dentures will have an exact fit. Shape and color are matched to the patient’s tissues. Finally, the dentist places the permanent dentures and makes any needed adjustments to make them comfortable. Temporary tenderness, increased saliva production, and problems speaking or swallowing may occur, but will subside quickly. Since the gums and ridges of the human mouth change over time and dentures do not, dentures need to be replaced about every three years.

The Maintenance and Care of Dentures

To get the best performance from your dentures, it’s essential to clean them every day. Be sure to use soft brushes and warm or cool water—hot water can warp dentures. Electronic denture baths and commercial denture soaks make cleaning simple. To prevent accidental breakage, dentures should be cleaned over a partially filled basin or soft towel. It’s preferable to remove dentures at night or at least for a few hours each day. Research has revealed that not doing so increases the risks of oral cancers and damage to oral tissues.
