The Routine Steps of a Root Canal

If you’re told you need a root canal, you may start to worry and wonder about what’s involved. Let this helpful guide to a root canal put your mind and mouth at ease. And ignore the myth about the procedure being painful. The only root canal pain you’ll feel is the ache while you wait for treatment. But during and after the root canal, pain is not an issue.

Tests Before Treatment – The only way to be certain that a root canal is right for you is to have an evaluation by an affordable dentist or a specialist in endodontics in Baltimore. Once you’re in the office, x-rays will be taken and you may be given a pulp test to check the tooth’s health. These tests should tell if a root canal is right for you.

Scheduling the Root Canal – If a root canal can relieve your pain, you’ll be scheduled for the procedure in either one or two appointments. Most root canals can be performed by any affordable dentist, but if your problem is severe, you may be referred to a specialist in endodontics in Baltimore.

Preparing for the Procedure – For maximum comfort throughout the root canal procedure, you’ll be given a local anesthesia to numb the tooth being treated. Then, a rubber dam gets placed on the tooth to keep the area clean during treatment.

Performing the Procedure – Now you’re ready for your root canal. Sit back, relax, and expect this course of care:

  • An opening is made in the tooth to allow the damaged pulp to be removed from the inner canals.
  • The canals are cleaned thoroughly with a disinfectant solution.
  • A series of files are used to shape the canals to remove hidden bacteria and ensure enough room for the root canal filling.
  • X-rays are taken throughout the procedure to monitor progress and accuracy.
  • The root canal is either filled immediately with a rubber-like substance, or treated with an antibiotic and filled a week later.
  • The tooth is sealed and restored with a crown.

Once the root canal is complete, you can return to normal activities the very next day with the confidence of a healthy smile.
