Save Yourself from Gum Disease

gum disease

The leading cause of tooth loss in America is gum disease. Gum disease is a highly preventable condition that affects more than 75 percent of the adult population. Prevention is as simple as basic, routine dental care habits, including regular visits to the family dentist.  While brushing and flossing daily are a first line of defense against gum disease, total prevention includes a professional dental care team. If you want to maintain a beautiful healthy smile for a lifetime and avoid painful inflammation of the gums and eventual tooth loss, make your dental health a top priority.

The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums that causes swollen, red gums that can bleed easily while brushing. Gingivitis is reversible with diligent dental care and intensive gingivitis treatment.

What Causes Gingivitis?

Missing a routine brushing, flossing, or rinsing with mouthwash allows food particles and bacteria, known as plaque, to remain on your teeth. In as little as twenty minutes after eating or drinking, plaque releases acids that erode the enamel of the teeth, which leads to tooth decay. Within in 72 hours, the plaque hardens and becomes tartar, which requires professional dental care for removal. If left untreated, the plaque and tartar spread to the gums, causing gingivitis, the inflammation of the gums.

What Causes Periodontitis?

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, but its development is dependent upon your body’s ability to fight the effects of plaque and bacteria in the mouth. Gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, also known as gum disease, due to any of these factors:

  • Oral bacteria. Although there are over 400 types of bacteria that live in the mouth, only 15 kinds that contribute to gum disease; however, those 15 are often aggressive without proper dental care.
  • Tobacco use. According to the American Dental Association, smoking or chewing tobacco is the number one cause of gum disease in the U.S.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes. Diabetes contributes to the development of gum disease by making those affected more susceptible to infection. And, gum disease can make it more difficult to control diabetes.
  • Genetics. Certain genes and inherited immune-response conditions have been linked to a predisposition for gum disease. It is thought that about 30 percent of people suffer from gum disease due to genetics.

The symptoms of gingivitis and gum disease can be subtle, which means regular visits to your dentist are essential for successful gum-disease or gingivitis treatment.
