Dental Emergency Self-Care Tips

A dental emergency can occur at any time, and some can even lead to life-threatening conditions like serious infections. Permanent damage to teeth or jawbones may also occur if emergencies aren’t handled properly. The earlier you can see your dentist, the better your chances are of saving your tooth and preventing painful and costly complications. If you’re in doubt as to whether a problem is truly an emergency dental situation, give your dentist a call. Keep an emergency dentist number where you can locate it quickly. In the meantime, follow these guidelines for dealing with common dental emergencies.

  • For a cracked or broken tooth, rinse your mouth out with warm water, apply ice or a cold compress, and call your dentist in Baltimore immediately.
  • If an object becomes lodged between your teeth, try to remove it with dental floss. If it doesn’t work, contact your dentist for an emergency dental appointment.
  • For a loose tooth, see an emergency dentist immediately. Apply a cold compress and take over-the-counter pain relievers if necessary.
  • A knocked-out tooth needs emergency dental care within the first hour to save it. Before transporting the tooth, hold it by the crown, and rinse it with water. Store the tooth in your mouth or, if this is not possible, place it in milk.
  • When a filling or crown falls out, store it in a safe location, and call your dentist immediately. If your tooth is painful or sensitive, ask your dentist about using clove oil or dental cement to relieve pain.
  • If your braces are damaged, call your orthodontist and explain what happened. In some cases, immediate treatment is needed, but minor problems can often be handled at the next appointment.
  • Painful swelling in your mouth may indicate an abscess, which could present a serious health threat. Rinse your mouth with salted water to relieve pain, but see your dentist as soon as possible.
  • A jaw injury may be serious; apply a cold compress and head to your local emergency room immediately.
  • Sudden tooth pain may be caused by a foreign object lodged between your teeth. If gently flossing does not alleviate the pain, see your dentist as soon as you can.
  • Use warm water to clean a bite or laceration to the lips, inner cheeks, or tongue. If bleeding is severe or won’t stop, go to your local emergency room immediately.
